Worship Leading Tip #5 - Leaders not performers

The best musicial performers are not necessarily the best worship leaders. Yet, musical skill should not be taken lightly.

The biggest hindrance to growth is PRIDE

“Pride sits in all our hearts by nature. We are born proud. Pride makes us rest satisfied with ourselves, think we are good enough as we are. It closes our ears against all advice, refuses the gospel of Christ and turns everyone to his own way… Be proud not of your own abilities, your own strength, your own knowledge, your own appearance, your own cleverness. Be not proud of yourself, and your talents of any kind.” J.C. Ryle

2. You can construct songs with Apple Loops, Software Instruments, or Audio tracks
3. An Audio recorder with as many tracks as you want

Worship Singers - Protecting and caring for your voice

1. Make sure to drink lots of decaffeinated liquid daily. Hydration is very important and caffeine has a drying effect.
2. Identify possible negative, vocal behaviors such as excessive throat clearing, coughing, loud talking, whispering, yelling, singing beyond your range, and hard vocal attack, (forced voicing).
3. Use good posture, a relaxed jaw, and a wet and open throat.
4. Use diaphragmatic breathing when singing and when speaking to support the voice and decrease vocal strain.
5. Relaxation exercises can be of benefit. Even yawning before singing helps to relax the muscles associated with voice use.
6. If you do a lot of talking throughout the day, then set aside some time for quiet activities.
7. Avoid dairy products as they are mucous producing.
8. Limit the use of decongestants because they are drying.
9. Warm-up the voice a little before trying to reach those low and high range extensions.
10. Give yourself some vocal rest. (some time out from talking or singing)

Worship Leading Tip #4 - Don't talk too much in-between each song

One of the biggest hindrances to worship is when the worship leader talks too much between the songs. Let your songs flow one into another without always having the addition of your opinions and comments. If you do talk while leading worship, make sure you have something to to say that is relevant to worship.

Youth and Farsi Christian Songs

So what do you think about Iranian worship music? Does it have the same effect on you as the English worship songs? It seems that many of our Iranian youth could relate more to non Farsi worship songs. When you ask them why they don't listen to Iranian Chritian worship songs, they simply say:

- "We can't relate to it"
- "It doesn't have the same effect"
- "The words are difficult to understand - language barrier"
- "The music is not as rich - music style related"
- "They are mostly evangelical in nature"
- etc.

What is the SOLUTION?
- Some are translating American Christian songs into Farsi
- Some are writing a new genre of Farsi Christian songs (pop, hip hop, rap, etc.)
- Some are resisting to change their styles
- Some are re-doing the old songs in new styles

What do you think?
We love to hear from you on this. Drop us an email at info@farsipraise.com and we will publish your ideas.

5 Things A beginning Worship Leader Needs To Know

I have been involved in and lead in worship for the past nine years. I made a lot of "Rookie" mistakes that were partly my own pride and partly inexperience, and frankly pride in the fact that I didn't want to appear inexperienced.

1.) Acknowledge Your weaknesses.
Contemporary worship leading is not something that you are born having the skills to do. Your calling may be true but You must acknowledge the fact that a lot of people have done this for longer than You have and that is "Ok." Be patient, seek the Lord and seek wise counsel from people who do this well. Put yourselves under someone You can trust and be willing to do whatever from playing the shaker to doing the slides to learning every aspect of worship ministry. God's plan is to use your weaknesses so don't hide from them. He will grow you up if you let Him.

2.) Practice your instrument diligently.
If you plan to lead from an instrument you must practice. Paul Baloche said he just "wanted enough proficiency to not be a hindrance in worship" I think this a model we can trust.

Psalm 33
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.

3.) Come without an agenda of Your own.
This is a biggie. ( or it least it was for me) You are not there to show your skills. You are there to be an usher into the presence of God, not the opening act. I am not saying to not prepare, but what I am saying is this is not a concert and it is not about you. You are an usher and as such you are a tool in Gods hand.

4.) Pay attention to Keys.
Make sure the melody does not go below middle C or above C2 (One octave higher). This will help congregation to sing. It is amazing how hard it is to sing when a song is too high (or too low). You will be scratching your head. Trust me I did for 6 month. I have a high voice. Not everyone does apparently....

5.) Listen. Listen. Listen.
Listen to worship leaders and try to gain from them what you can. This is holy envy and they have burned a path you may be able to follow if you need to. I am not advocating copying someone or even their arrangements but their recordings will give you valuable insights into musical interpretations you may want to emulate.

On a final Note....

When He calls us, we are not usually the most prepared people, but he is faithful to complete the work that Has started in You and in all of us. I thank God He is true to His word.

10 reasons people don't sing in Church

10. You have played that song every week since 1999.
9. They don't know the song.
8. The Key of the song is too high or too low.
7. The music is too loud or too soft.
6. The worship leader is doing too many voice inflections and the melody can not be followed.
5. They have not been taught that it is ok.
4. They don't like thier voice/they don't like to.
3. They have not engaged thier hearts and minds and strength.
2. They came to church for other reasons.
1. They are hurting and don't feel like it.

Worship Leading Tip #3 - Worship First, Service Second

We can be so busy trying to do something for God that we miss God! Our lives are to be consumed with praise. Service flows out of worship. Service as a substitute for worship is idolatry.

Worship Leading Tip #2 - Be Humble

Worship is all about being totally ‘given to God’, and allowing a genuine affection to be shown in humility. True humility is a rare gift which is not encouraged by the world as it’s so counter-culture. Humility is the essence of "Kingdom" culture.

The 7 Hebrew words for Praise

When reading the Psalms, it is important to note that there are several words translated into English as "praise," or in Farsi as تسبيح يا پرستش يا حمد but the various root words have very different meanings.

Psalm 108:1,3
"O God, my heart is fixed, I will sing and give praise (ZAMAR), even with my glory (honor)...I will praise (YADAH) Thee, O Lord among the people. And I will sing praises (TEHILLAH) unto Thee among the nations."

Psalm 145
Verse 2: "Every day I will bless Thee, and I will praise (HALAL) Thy name forever and ever."
Verse 3: "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised (HALAL)"
Verse 4: "One generation shall praise (SHABACH) Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts."
Verse 10: "All Thy works shall praise (YADAH) Thee O Lord, and Thy saints shall bless Thee."

1. YADAH - يدا

Definition: Yadah is a verb with a root meaning, "the extended hand, to throw out the hand, therefore to worship with extended hand." According to the Lexicon, the opposite meaning is, "to bemoan, the wringing of hands."

Example: Psalm 63:4 -- "Thus I will bless Thee while I live, I will (YADAH) lift up my hands in Thy name"

Other References: Ps 134:2, Ps 141:2; II Chron 20:19-21

2. TOWDAH - تودا

Definition: Towdah comes from the same principal root word as Yadah but is used more specifically. Towdah literally means, "an extension of the hand in adoration, avowal, or acceptance." By way of application, it is apparent in the Psalms and elsewhere that it is used for thanking God for "things not yet received" as well as things already at hand.

Example: Psalm 50:14 -- "Offer unto God praise (TOWDAH) and pay thy vows unto the Most High"
"What I want from you is your true thanks. I want your promises fulfilled." [Tay]

Other References: II Chron 29:31; Jer 30:19; Ps 26:7

3. HALAL - حلال

Definition: Halal is a primary Hebrew word for praise. Our word "hallelujah" comes from this base. It means, "to be clear, to shine, to boast, show, to rave, celebrate, to be clamorously foolish."

Example: Psalm 113:1 -- "Praise (HALAL) ye the Lord, Praise (HALAL) O ye servants of the Lord, praise (HALAL) the name of the Lord."

Other References: Ps 104, 105, 106

4. SHABACH - شباخ

Definition: Shabach means, "to address in a loud tone, to commend, to triumph, to exclaim, glory, shout."

Example: Psalm 145:4 -- "One generation shall praise (SHABACH) thy works to another and declare Thy mighty acts."

Other References: Ps 63:1,3,4; Ps 117:1; Ps 35:27; Is 12:6; Ps 106:47

5. BARAK - براك

Definition: Barak means, "to kneel down, to bless God as an act of adoration." When used in the scripture it implies, "expecting to receive a blessing from the Lord."

Example: Psalm 95:6 -- "O come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel (BARAK) before the Lord our maker."
"Come let us throw ourselves at His feet in homage." [NEB]
"Let us bend thy knee in the presence of Jehovah our Creator." [Spurrel]

Other References: I Chron 29:20; Neh 9:5

6. ZAMAR - ذمار

Definition: Zamar means, "to touch the strings" and is used concordantly with instrumental worship. Psalm 150 is a perfect example of this kind of praise. David said, "Awake my glory; awake harp and lyre, I will awaken the dawn!

I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises (ZAMAR) to Thee among the nations."

Example: Psalm 21:13 --
"Be Thou exalted O Lord, in Thine own strength, so will we sing and praise (ZAMAR) Thy power."
"We sing and strike the harp to Thy power" [DeWitt]
"With song and with string we will sound forth Thy power" [RHM]

Other References: Ps 66:2,4; Is 12:5

7. TEHILLAH - تحيلا

Definition: Tehillah simply means, "to sing, to laud." "God is enthroned on the praises (TEHILLAH) of Israel" (Ps 22:3). This is the kind of praise that God dwells in. Any form of singing can be praise, but one of the higher forms was the Dorean mode which was neither western major nor oriental minor. It was sort of chanting whereby the words of HALAL were melodiously chanted. This is the expression of praise the Psalmist said God inhabited.

Examples:
Psalm 33:1 -- "Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; for praise (TEHILLAH) is comely for the upright."
Psalm 34:1 -- "...His praise (TEHILLAH) shall continually be in my mouth."

Other References: I Chron 16:35; Is 42:10,12; II Chron 20:22

Christian Worship Music and Copyright Laws

It is so important for Christians to respect other
individual’s rights. That is how we think of
copyright laws. As a Christian whether Iranian,
Assyrian, Armenian, Afghani, or Citizens of Heaven no
matter what country we are from, we need to ensure
that we do not offend and disrespect other
individuals. That is why it is so important when it
comes to Christian worship leaders, worshipers or
ministers to do the basics. Sometimes it is as easy as
asking permission from the original author. For example for a lot
of Christian worship music (including Farsi Christian
(worship) music translated from English songs)
permission can be easily obtained through licensing
organizations such as Music Services located at:
http://www.musicservices.org/ or BMI (Broadcast Music
Incorporated) located at: http://www.bmi.com. For
Christian or worship and praise songs by Iranian,
Armenian, Assyrian or Afghani songs one can easily
contact the original artist and request permission.
Their contact information is usually found on their CD
or Album. You may want to also accomplish this via
electronic mail or letter correspondence.
The US Copyright office has a lot of good information
for U.S. Copyright Laws. You can access it at:
ttp://www.copyright.gov.
There are also other non US sites for reference such
as:
